According to a recent internal survey conducted by HealthMetrics, more than 50 percent of companies were not prepared for flexible hours or working remotely when the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented on March 18.

Fast forward, 40 percent of these companies are still facing challenges and are unable to operate fully.

The employee wellness and benefits platform is urging for the adoption of digital and automation technologies which will not only increase efficiency but also save cost and increase team productivity as employees work from home.

Essential tools such as Microsoft Teams and advanced software such as the Zendesk for Customer Service Management, according to HealthMetrics, will help to create a flexible working culture and ensure a smooth transition into a fully remote environment.

“Employers have a responsibility to create informative and straightforward guidelines on how they would like their employees to make daily check-ins and reports. This will encourage trust and a higher level of engagement between employers and employees,” HealthMetrics said.

The platform further found that by connecting the entire organisation through a selected platform, company-wide updates were channeled to each member systematically and departmental goals were also communicated to teams every week to ensure that every member was aligned.

According to an article by SAP and Microsoft, a prolonged lack of in-person exchanges with peers and colleagues due to isolation can lower productivity and engagement levels while decreasing employee motivation. Coupled with the stress and anxiety caused by Covid-19, this can lead to a variety of mental health issues, the employer wellness platform pointed out.

The HealthMetrics team further encourages companies to host virtual social gatherings for its employees to take a break from work and connect with one another on a peer-to-peer level instead. Furthermore, a company-wide care package delivery would also help to boost morale and communicate a sense of support and camaraderie among teams.

“Malaysians are facing a period of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Companies should be made aware that it is necessary to learn and adapt from lessons of Covid-19,” HealthMetrics said.
